Untitled (Nautilus pompilius)--Update#2

This week’s focus has been on finalizing the design for the acrylic. It still has not arrived, so there is time to finesse before bringing it to MassArt’s Laser Lab. In order to have the acrylic cut, I need to present an .ai file in pure red, with a stroke of 0.001 pt. The WIP screenshot of the file is currently at 1 pt for your viewing. I finalized the size of the insert for the nautilus shell, reminiscing on the renaissance carved cups (see this blog post).

Some factoids:

“Nautilus pompilius is only found in the dimly lit tropical and warm temperate waters of the Indo-Pacific region in southeast Asia and Australia. It is the most widespread of any of the nautiluses and like most of the species, it spends most of the day at depths up to 2,300 feet. At night it migrates slowly up the coral reef slopes to forage for food at about 250 feet deep.” - Jennifer Kennedy, "Nautilus Facts: Habitat, Behavior, Diet"

Historically, Amsterdam was a great port/trading city. The Dutch were full of gold and full of excursions, so perhaps the nautilus was a symbol of the buoyancy of their commerce. Holland was also a leader in map-making and they had the best routes to South East Asia… and perhaps… access to the shells….
