For the past week, I have been studying and researching the mating ritual of the Superb Bird of Paradise. Observing the hopping of the male Superb Bird of Paradise, as well as the response from the female counterpart. In my research, I learned that the female bird will often reject the male bird up to fifteen times before consenting to a mate. The male Superb Bird of Paradise hops and dances around the female for hours, times lasting days, trying to impress the female.
The female Superb Bird of Paradise is a BOSS. The concept of multiple rejections after such an elaborate and comical dance had me laughing out of my seat. I want to bring this comedy and interest to this bird through my art as it had on me when I first learned about it. I am making a comic illustration depicting this mating ritual, personifying the birds in a way humans can relate to and laugh with.
These are the first sketches of my comic illustration. I am currently testing with color, composition, and text to best communicate the humor I’m trying to get across. I’m planning on making this final illustration digitally using a Wacom tablet.
