Walking Gibbon; an Intro

Taty Williams, Illustration, 2024
Hey, I’m Taty and I’m a rising sophomore in Illustration at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I’m originally from Central MA, and took art and photography classes all throughout high school. My goal in being an artists isn’t clear yet, but I hope to have a clearer view as I go through my college years. I enjoy cartoons, anime, and music and love incorporating those into my work.

Project Summary: My idea for this project is to make a monkey walking gif. The specific breed a monkey I want to focus on is the white cheeked gibbon. I’ve had a fascination for them as of recently and would love to learn more about why they do the things they do. The main focuses I want to research are about their walking styles. I plan to make this fully digital.

About the White Cheeked Gibbons

White cheeked gibbons are primates apart of the hylobatidae family. They can grow to be 18 to 25 inches and weigh up to 20 pounds. T'hey can be found in tropical rainforests of China. Gibbons have super long arms so they can swing high in the tree canopies at high speeds. Their main means of transportation is through locomotion; which is  swinging through the treetops with their arms. They can also transport through bipedalism; which is walking on two legs.

I have 0 experience with animation so my first step is to try making a walk cycle so I can decide if this is something I wanted to do. Now that I understand the anatomy of how a walk cycle works, my next step is to make this figure more monkey-like.
