Nicki Santamaria, Painting, 2021
I primarily work in a charcoal medium on paper, but also create works that are oil-based and on canvas. These pieces are dedicated to the portrayal of fish, since I have many negative past situations with fish, but also am in love with the ocean and its nature. I believe that nature is not nearly as respected as it should be and I create work that revolves around fish to show the importance and beauty of these creatures.
The Sturgeon Fish
I will be creating a charcoal drawing that incorporates both my current art style and practice with the Sturgeon Fish and the cause of their endangerment. I will be focusing on portraying Sturgeon Fish, more specifically the Beluga Sturgeon. I will research why they are endangered and how they are caught for their caviar. I will also find out what can be done and what is currently being done to protect them from extinction. In addition to this, I will also be highlighting their ability to live so long and how/why they are able to achieve this lifespan.
