As you can see, these eyes are... unique. Mantis shrimp have several different abilities when it comes to vision. They have 12 color receptors whereas humans only have 3, leading to the assumption that these shrimps can see more colors than us. That is not necessarily true. Humans can see a much wider spectrum of color and detect subtle shifts in hue. Conversely, Mantis shrimp can only see the 12 colors which correspond to their receptors. This is still impressive though, considering many animals are not able to see these many colors. In addition to color vision, they also have polarized, ultraviolet, and trinocular vision.
I have always been interested in understanding the way other animals see and experience life and how seeing through these different perspectives helps us to better understand the world. Throughout the course of this project I will make an attempt to allow us to see how Mantis Shrimp see. I plan to use several mediums in order to achieve this, since all of these ways of seeing are so different. I am undecided on exactly how I will execute my plan but I guess that's part of the adventure!
