Intro to: Faerie Homes

Claire Seddon - Interrelated Media Major - MassArt ‘24

I am a rising sophomore studying multimedia sculpture and performance art. I grew up on a nature preserve in southern NH, and have always had a deep love and connection with nature. As I grow as an artist, I continue developing and expressing my love for biology and natural magick in my work. For my whole life, I’ve been infatuated with faeries. In the beginning, it was a pure childish love of little flying magick creatures, but as I got older reconnected with my Irish Pagan roots, my fascination bloomed into a deep respect and connection to the idea of faeries. Additionally, I come from a matriarch of herbalists so that has only deepened my respect for the earth.

For my project, I will be studying how various animals make their homes, such as weaver birds, caddisflies, beavers, etc. With that information, I will then make a sustainable Faerie House using found materials. I’ve been making these out of sticks rocks and bark since I was little, but I’ve always had a whole forest to gather materials from. Now that I am studying in Boston, I am interested to see what I will be able to make with found things from the city. I might need to use some non-found objects, but I will save those as a last resource.
