How Birds Fly: inside and out.

Hello! My name is Rachel and I am an art educator and multi-media artist at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. My project will be investigating, through notes, sketches and painting, how birds fly, inside and out.

In my project I will be working with and depicting specifically the Passer domesticus. The House Sparrow is a bird that has embedded itself into my artistic practice and has become a symbol of life after death, and freedom. I chose this bird not only for the meaning it holds to me but also for its embodiment of something too often taken as ordinary. In this project I will be observing how birds fly including how birds' anatomy and environment work together to create the remarkable flight that we too often overlook. I invite you to join me in discovering how birds fly, inside and out.
