Freshwater Crayfish: Week 2

    Cherax Pulcher

Crayfish are arthropods so they have a hard exoskeleton which is shed and regrown continually throughout their life.

Here I am working on designing the parts that I will have to make for the final piece. I am thinking of working on this sculpture in a modular sort of way where the exoskeleton is broken into fragments that will all be sown together in the end. I think this will add dimension and a little more flexibility to the final form.

I have also been looking at other species of crayfish, particularly for the unique coloring:

Procambarus alleni
Origin: Florida, USA

Procambarus Vasquezae
Origin: Mexico

Cherax peknyi Origin: Indonesia

Procambarus  Fallax f. Virginalis (Marmorkreb)
Origin: North America

*also known as a Marmorkreb, this species of crayfish reproduces through parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction. This species is frequently sold as a pet for it marbled patterning but also poses a threat to wildlife as an invasive species.
