Feeling Green: How Plants Can Improve Mental/Physical Health

*Week 5 Update (Final Update)*

Meghan Kasper
Welcome back for the final update!

Thank you so much for sticking with me through this project! I spent a lot of time working on finishing this piece throughout the week and ended up with a final product that I am actually very proud of and happy with. In my last post, I was very discouraged and having a tough time finding a way to make this work for me, so I am beyond happy that I figured it out. Getting methods down that worked well and creating solid colors that weren't sheer and showing the velvet board through took a long time, but the end result proved to be very worth it. You can see images of the final product below!...

I did end up adding some fake plants to the piece which gave it more detail, depth and energy. I had mentioned in one of the first blog posts I made that adding a 3D element was something I was thinking about doing, but I never really committed to the idea or created a solid plan. But I realized that the piece was feeling very flat, so I ended up collecting some of the fake plants from around my room and cut/manipulated them so that they would work well in my piece. Some pieces are hot glued on, others are tied on with wire that is secured in the back with tape, and one is secured with wire through a hole that I cut in the velvet board with an X-Acto knife.

When I finally finished the piece, it was time to photograph it. I took the first picture against a plain white background like most pictures of artwork are taken and this helped to show what it would look like against a gallery wall if it were being displayed in person. It felt somewhat plain to me though and I wanted to see if I could play around with how I captured the image. I was hoping I could place it out in nature and have it immersed in real plants, but unfortunately it has been pretty rainy this week so that hasn't been an option. But I do have a big window in my dorm room, so I stuck my piece against the window to get a more active and lively background and I think it was a really fun way to capture an image of my piece, but still not taking away from the beauty of it.

Thank you so much for following me along on this project!
That's all for now :)
