Family Roots - Diversity within a Genus, Update 3

 Emily Morgan - Family Roots

For the 3rd week of my Family Roots project exploring diversity within a genus through begonias, I have created the wire shapes for all the leaves and am now moving onto the paper mache portion of this project. In total there are 11 different types of begonias being represented, with some of those 11 having multiple variants, such as the rex begonias. I’m extremely excited to paint on all the different leaf patterns and textures after I paper mache, and I’ve also decided to try and recreate some of the distinct flowers of each plant out of tissue paper and pastels! There very well may be an extra update at some point this week because of all the extra work I’m adding to the project, but I can’t wait to really start seeing all these separate elements combine into my vision for this artwork!

Here are all my wire leaves, as well as how they will be oriented on the canvas board!

Here's the sketchbook page that I referenced while I was shaping the leaves from the wire to make sure I was getting the right shape, as well as to keep track of how many different types of begonias I was making and their names.

And here's some photographs of what all those begonias actually look like!

Here's all the begonias with the links to the photos.

Begonia fact of the week! Begonias can be categorized in a multitude of ways, but one common way is by root structure. The different separations would be Fibrous-rooted, Hardy, Rex, Rhizomatous, and Tuberous!

Thank you for stopping by!
