Evolution of the Cecropia Moth (Week 2 Update)

Taylor Geus

Facts I’ve Learned:

  • Cecropia larva have the ability to eat so that they may mature into their moth form, however as they undergo metamorphosis, they lose their digestive system and mouths

    • Caterpillars feed on Red Maple, Black Walnut, Pin Oak trees, and more

  • Most moths emerge from their cocoons from May to June with a wingspan of 5-6 inches

  •  The males have large antennae that can pick up the scent of a female from a mile away

  • The caterpillars go through 5 instars (skin sheddings) before they become moths

    - Their coloring consists of a pale green body with multi-colored knobs coming off the body (typically red and yellow, sometimes resembles small ladybugs)
