Cicadas and 'Mind Control' Fungi

This week I worked on illustrating my final three images:
  • Magicicada magna shedding its wingless nymph exoskeleton
  • An an alternative view of Magicicada octo perched on a twig
  • A cross section of earth showing cicada nymphs feeding on the xylem fluid of plant roots

With the weather warming, we can expect to see Brood X emerging soon. Once the soil reaches 64℉ cicada nymphs will tunnel their way to the surface, shed their exoskeletons, inflate their wings with fluid, and harden their adult exoskeletons.

My next step is to color each image and photoshop them into the book format. Stay tuned for the final product next week!
