The purpose of this coloring book is to explore the relationship between organisms living in the Mojave Desert and their environment. The desert is one of the most preserved ecosystems in America, with most people settling around the environment rather than on top of it. It is fascinating how much diversity there is in the desert that you hardly see because the species here exist within the environment almost entirely, camouflaging themselves perfectly. I created 6 digital illustrations using my iPad, filling in the areas of the drawings with different patterns to represent this camouflaging effect the desert has. I put the book together by hand using the ‘perfect binding’ method. I paired the illustrations with some facts about the specific species depicted, specifically about how they exist within their environment.
The finished artwork is on exhibit now in the Art±Biology Methods Exhibition.
